Dylan Halliday Wins ITA’s George Roberts Competition
The 2023 International Trombone Festival was held July 12-15 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. The ITF features a number of competition finals, and this year Dylan Halliday was selected for the finals of the George Roberts Bass Trombone Solo Competition for bass trombonists ages 22 and under. The finals piece was Shades by Marcus Wilcher. After the final round of competition, Dylan was selected as the winner!
Dylan was awarded a Rejano iGLOO Bass Trombone Mute, Encore Music Publishers the One Hundred by Doug Yeo, a Greg Black mouthpiece, a $100 gift certificate to Cimarron Music Press, and Zoom lessons with Zach Bond, Nick Schwartz, and Eden Garza.
The competition is held in memory of bass trombonist George Roberts, who created a voice for the bass trombone in the big band, that all bass trombonists since have tried to follow. Mr. Roberts was known to many as “Mr. Bass Trombone” and was a beloved member of the southern California music community until he passed in 2014.
