Special Guest Artist Visits During Spring 2023 Semester

The OSU Trombone Studio hosted several guest artists during the spring 2023 semester.

Our first special visit was by Peter Steiner and Constanze Hochwartner from January 22-24.  The residency included the guests performing an incredible recital, 5 masterclasses, lessons, and 3 rehearsals of Ethan Do’s composition Plus One, which was premiered by Peter and the OSU Trombone Octet.  This was a truly wonderful experience, and we can’t wait to have Peter and Constanze back!

On January 28th, we were very fortunate to have a low brass masterclass with Mick Mulcahy of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  This event was made possible by the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts, and was part of a residency of the entire Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  The first hour of the masterclass was for the trombone studio, and featured Dylan Halliday performing the Elizabeth Raum Bass Trombone Concerto, and the OSU Trombone Octet performing Three Shanties by Timothy Jackson.  The second hour was for the tuba/euphonium studio, and featured Jacob Lacambra, and the Graduate Tuba Quartet.  It was an amazing afternoon, and it was thrilling to hear the Chicago Symphony perform at the McKnight Performance Hall that evening.

On February 3rd, we had a masterclass with Pedro Carrero, who was in town performing with the musical On Your Feet.  Pedro is an incredibly versatile artist, and it was fantastic getting to working with him.  Pedro showed the trombone studio several fundamental exercises, and he coached the OSU Trombone Octet.  It was a very rewarding afternoon, and several members of the studio were able to attend the musical.
